Talking About: My Most Anticipated Games For 2017 So Far
I dunno why but all of a sudden I feel like writing this. I think that's a good thing though, since I haven't written anything in a long while (3 months...). But I might as well write about games I'm excited for in 2017. There's a few games, so I can probably go into detail into them. Probably a better idea than just making them a long series of tweets. So far in 2017 there haven't been many new games. that I've been interested in. Most of them I just don't care about. Although a few stick out like Yakuza 0, and Tekken 7, that especially I've been playing a lot. So much damn Tekken man. The game is really good, and I'm still learning it. I've most;y been playing a lot of older games. So anyway, I might as well start it off then. Probably not in any order, but I'll just list them.
Dungeon Travelers 2-2
The first game I'm talking about is already out in Japan, but I'm hoping for some kinda surprise announcement from ATLUS USA to give either a 2017 or 2018 release, Considering that ATLUS USA translated and brought over the previous Dungeon Travelers 2 on Vita about 2 years ago and seem to have a good relationship with Aquaplus and Sting, especially since they just recently released Utawarerumono Mask of Deception. I can see this game coming out. It seems to be a direct sequel to Dungeon Travelers 2, and even has the same characters and classes from that game, although I think the main character is different. I thought the game was really damn good, and very challenging, and I'd like the sequel to come out eventually. However, ATLUS USA might have their fall releases filled up with the 3rd Utawarerumono game, Radiant Historia remake, and Etrian Odyssey V. So I think it might release in 2018 in English, along with the next game I'm gonna talk about.
Shin Megami Tensei Deep Strange Journey
Yeah, the next game I'm talking about is a Megami Tensei game. And it's the 3DS remake of SMT Strange Journey called Deep Strange Journey. Unlike Dungeon Travelers 2-2, this game actually has an English release date, but it's next year in 2018.... But it least it comes out this fall in Japan, So I can at least find out what kinda new or returning demons are gonna be there. And I really need to track down a DS copy of Strange Journey before this comes out, so I don't have to worry about spoilers or anything. I'd rather play the original first, since I love Kazuma Kaneko's art, and this is technically the last mainline game he's done. Interesting thing is it will have Japanese voices only in the English versions of the game. I think that's interesting because ATLUS USA always pushes their dubs in peoples' faces. But yeah, I'm excited for it.
Yakuza Kiwami
I've been meaning to play the series since forever, but I need a lot of money so I can play them all and a lot of time to play all the games so I can be caught up when the 6th game releases in English next year. Kiwami is a remake of the original Ryu ga Gotoku / Yakuza game on PS2 but using the engine, combat and assets from Yakuza 0, the prequel. It's all about Kazuma Kiryu, kicking dude's asses in the streets, beating them up with bikes, fish, watching softcore porn and a bunch of other stuff. I'm mad at myself for not playing these games.... But I seriously need to get around to them. This series is one of the few SEGA keeps around that's still really good from what it seems, plus it's made by Toshihiro Nagoshi, the guy who was behind Daytona USA, F-Zero GX and a bunch of their arcade games.
Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga (Remake)
I was pretty pleasantly surprised by to find out that my favorite Mario RPG ever has a remake. And the remake comes out in a couple months from now. The graphics got a complete overhaul, using the engine and graphical style from the 3DS games. It looks like it's a completely faithful remake with all the original story, Bro Moves and everything intact. My only concern is that the combat might be slowed down due to having things like the double jump attack, and it might effect the pacing. In the original Superstar Saga, the game had very fast combat, everything flowed well and battles didn't feel like a hassle. However, ever since that game, that game, the battles have gotten slower and more monotonous. I never finished Mario & Luigi Dream Team due to the slow battles, they dragged on. So hopefully, the Superstar Saga remake is really good. (I miss the bonus Mario Bros game though..)
Earth Defense Force 5
EDF!! EDF!! EDF!! I don't need to say much about why I'm excited for EDF 5, it's gonna have the same awesome shooting, giant bugs, giant mechs and even more crazy action! The classes have gotten a few upgrades since 4.1 and look to have more variety in the things they can do, like the Ranger being able to use gun bikes, and Wing Divers being able to do an air dash, making them maneuver a lot better in the air, making them less clunky. Totally looking forward to the brand new EDF, the game looks like it'll have all the awesome action from the previous games, but with more stuff like mentioned before. I'm ready to save our Mother Earth from any alien attack, from vicious giant insects who have once again come back. We'll unleash all our forces, we won't cut them any slack. THE EDF DEPLOYS!!!
Super Mario Odyssey
Arguably my most anticipated game of the entire year (aside from the last entry on this list), I got to play Super Mario Odyssey at Nintendo World during E3 week, and I'm so excited for this game. I have an upcoming post talking about how I feel about the games controls and stuff, but for now I'll just say that the game really does feel like Super Mario Sunshine in terms of controls and overall game flow, and I'm very happy about that since Sunshine is my favorite 3D Mario game. Odyssey seems to be finally getting the Mario out of that creative rut it's been in ever since games like New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Super Mario 3D Land have come out, but Odyssey is bursting with new stuff. The new hat mechanics and improvements to level designs and dressing Mario up are cool.
Xenoblade 2
Okay, other than Mario Odyssey, this right here is probably my #1 anticipated game of the year. During the January Nintendo Switch presentation, I was flipping out due to the fact that a new Xenoblade game is coming, and it's more related to the original game on the Wii as opposed to the spiritual sequel on Wii U. The environments are huge, the combat has some interesting improvements and changes, and I just wanna play the new Xeno game already damn it. At first I thought it was a true sequel to Xenoblade, but it turns out to be more of an indirect sequel that just shares the same kinds of themes and motifs from Xenoblade, but holy shit I need this game already. Stop making me wait, Takahashi...
